Not in bed. In the head.
I need that on the record before anyone starts smirking. This is not a review of anyone’s stamina. Most of them can manage the physical bit. Some of them are genuinely good. The collapse happens later, when I ask a normal question like what Saturday looks like.
That is when they need space. First. Immediately. Like I have asked for keys and a joint account.
I have watched it enough times now that I can feel it coming. The filthy girl is welcome. The girl who wants a day plan is treated like a problem he did not order.
They fall for the easy version
I know why they like me at the start. I make it simple. I can walk into a room looking sorted, talk filth without turning it into a TED talk, sleep with someone and leave looking like I meant to. Men love a woman who seems like she will not need anything in daylight.
That version of me is a good time. She does not sit on the sofa rewriting a text. She does not ask if this is going somewhere. She is heat with decent eyeliner.
Then I do something tiny and human.
I ask if he is free at the weekend.
Not define us. Not meet my flatmates. Saturday. Food. A time. The kind of ordinary that turns a night into a person.
And the spine goes.
Some vanish. Some get worse than vanishing. They stay warm enough to keep me hanging and vague enough to avoid a table. Work is mad. This week is messy. Maybe later. They still want me after midnight. They just cannot locate me in the afternoon.
Saturday is not a trap
I used to pretend Saturday did not matter. Easier to be the girl who shrugs. Easier to say I do not do boyfriends, then check if he viewed the story like an idiot.
Saturday matters. Saturday is, I will be seen with you when people have plans. Saturday is, you exist when you have slept and eaten and have other options. Saturday is the opposite of a secret.
If a man can talk for an hour about what he wants to do to me and cannot pick a restaurant, I have all the information I need. He is not confused. He is available for the bit that benefits him.
I can live with someone who only wants sex. Say it. I like sex. I am not going to faint. What I cannot do is the performance where he acts attached in my bed and allergic to a calendar.
The pattern is so boring I could set a timer
Match. Chat. Filthy in a way that feels like chemistry. We sleep together. It is good enough that I start liking him in the inconvenient way, the way where I notice his voice in the morning and the stupid joke he made about my trainers.
I tell myself I am being cool.
Then I ask a normal thing. Are you around this weekend. Do you want food. Can I see you when you are not already halfway into my clothes.
That is the moment. You can watch the man who was so sure at 1am become fog at 11.
He needs space. He has a lot on. He does not want to mess me about, which is always the sentence people use right before they mess you about.
I used to turn that into a story about me. Too keen. Too easy. Too much. Too loud. I can do that loop in my sleep. A quiet reply still lands in my chest like something has gone wrong and I am supposed to smile through it.
Now I think a lot of them just wanted the heat. They liked the girl who did not ask. I asked. They went soft.
Soft in the head is not the same as shy
Shy I can work with. Shy still shows up. Soft in the head means he can be decisive about an Uber and useless about next week. It means he wants the benefit of being wanted without the inconvenience of being known.
People dress it up as fear. Poor thing, he got scared because he liked you. Sometimes that is true. I have liked people and left before breakfast. I know that move. I invented half of it.
There is a difference between needing a minute and refusing to speak like a person. One is human. The other is keeping me on a hook because the late night version is useful and the daytime version might ask him to be consistent.
Consistency is not romance. It is a text that is not only sent when he is bored. It is a plan that survives sobriety. It is not treating my Saturday like a commitment ceremony.
I train them, which I hate admitting
I make it easy. That is on me as well.
I keep it light so I do not look needy. I offer my body before I offer lunch because sex is the language I trust. I let things stay undefined because undefined still feels like I have not risked anything. Then I get annoyed when they stay in the lane I built.
If I only show the smirk, I should not be shocked when they cannot handle the rest. The rest of me wants a boyfriend and a bit of money and someone who does not disappear the second it gets simple. The rest of me wants to be chosen in public, not just handled in the dark.
I am thirty. I manage a warehouse. I can do rotas and numbers and a twelve hour shift. I should be able to ask a grown man if he wants pizza on Saturday without it turning into a personality crisis. The fact that it still does says as much about who I pick as it does about them.
What I am trying, badly
I am not becoming a woman who needs a five year plan after one good night. That is not me. I still like heat. I still like being filthy. I still like a night that does not come with a lecture.
I am trying to ask the Saturday question sooner. If that is when he goes soft, I want to know before I start building a little life out of two voice notes and a jumper he left.
I am trying not to treat a midnight message like proof. It is only proof he was awake.
I am trying to let the decent ones stay in the room even when they scare me. Kind men rattle me more than lads. A lad going cold confirms the story I already own. A man who books a table asks me to stop performing and mean it.
That last one is the work. I can survive being used. I am less practised at staying when someone actually wants me there in the morning.
No tidy ending
I am not wrapping this in a lesson. I keep dating men who go soft because part of me still chooses the ones who light up for the night and dim for the week. It feels familiar. It lets me leave first in my head even when I am the one waiting for a reply.
I also keep hoping one of them will hear Saturday and just say yes. Not as a grand gesture. As a normal thing. A time. A place. A person who does not need space the second I stop being convenient.
Until then I am calling it what it is. Not mixed signals. Not a mystery. Not me being too much.
They wanted the girl who did not ask. I asked. They went soft in the head.
The rest is me trying not to make that my whole personality.
