I Wanted Defined And He Wanted Access
Same bed. Different contracts.
That is the whole disaster, really. You can have good sex and still be in two different relationships. He is in the one where chemistry counts as a yes. You are in the one where you are waiting for a sentence that never arrives.
I used to think the sex would sort it. If it was good enough, he would say it. If I was easy enough, he would stay. If I did not ask, I could not be too much. That is how a good night becomes a whole winter.
He thought the agreement was the feeling.
We had that first night where everything landed. Timing, mouth, the stupid laugh in the dark. He looked at me like I was the plan. Then morning came and the plan was just his T-shirt on my chair and a text that said last night was mad.
Mad is not a word you can build a Saturday on.
I said see you soon because I did not want to be the girl who asks what this is while her makeup is still on the pillow. He heard see you soon as access granted. Door open. Body on tap. No need to name anything in daylight.
That is the trick of chemistry. It feels like a contract. It is not. It is weather. Weather does not owe you next week.
Access is cheap. Defined costs him something.
Access means he can have me when the week is boring. Defined means he has to show up when I am knackered from a late, when my flatmates are in the kitchen, when I want dinner that is not a prelude. Defined is public. Access is a lock screen and a maybe.
I am good at access. That is the unflattering bit. I know how to keep it light. I know how to leave before breakfast so nobody has to have the conversation. I have built a whole personality on being easy to have and hard to keep. It plays well. It also leaves me on the night bus doing the maths I said I would not do.
He wanted the version of me that does not ask. I wanted one line. Are we dating. Are we not. I can do casual if it is honest. I cannot do casual that keeps borrowing relationship hours.
Good morning texts. Checking I got home. Remembering my rota. That is not casual. That is a man taking the perks and leaving the title on the table.
The mismatch does not announce itself.
It creeps. One week you are a secret. Next week you are in his kitchen eating toast like you live there. Then his mates are in town and you are not invited, and he says it is not like that, and you say of course, and you both pretend that sentence did not just tell the truth.
I filled the gap with sex because sex is the language I speak when the other one feels dangerous. If I can make it good, maybe he will not leave the quiet place. If I am wanted, maybe I am safe. That logic has never worked. I still use it. I am thirty, not cured.
By the time I asked, I had already given him a winter. That is on me as much as him. He did not steal access. I handed it over and called it chemistry so I would not have to hear no.
What defined actually looks like, for the record.
Not a speech. Not a soft launch with my wrist in his story. A sentence I can repeat to my flatmates without translating.
We are seeing each other. I am not seeing other people. I want you on Saturday in public, not just after last orders. That is defined. It is boring on paper. It is the difference between being chosen and being available.
He said he was not ready. I have heard that one enough to know it means ready for the bits that suit him. Ready for my mouth. Not ready for my name in a group chat.
Believe the first draft. I keep wanting the second one because the sex was good and he had kind hands and I am a fool for kind hands.
How a good night becomes a season.
You keep the door unlocked. You tell yourself you are being chill. You wear the good bra on a Tuesday in case he lands. Your whole week tilts around a maybe. That is not passion. That is unpaid labour I do in my own head.
Then it is December in your chest and he is still saying we are just seeing what happens. What happened is I spent three months being a convenience with good makeup.
I do not regret the night. I regret the contract I signed without reading. Chemistry is not consent to a winter. It is consent to that evening. Everything after needs words.
Next time I want the sentence early, while I still like myself. If he cannot give it, he can have the memory and not the spare key.
Same bed is easy. Same page is the work. I am done doing both jobs.
