Stay For The Glass Of Water After

The night is not finished when you finish

I do not care how good it was. I do not care if I said your name like I meant it. Sit up. Find a glass. Talk rubbish. Put a hand on my back like I am still in the room.

That quiet bit is how I decide you get another.

People treat aftercare like a spa add-on. Warm towels. Playlist. Some speech about how special I am. I am not asking for a ceremony. I am asking you not to roll over like the job is done and I am the receipt.

I can tell in about four minutes.

You go quiet in a way that is not peaceful. You reach for your phone. You start doing that little scan of the room, keys, socks, the fastest route to the door without looking rude. I have seen it so many times I could time it.

I am still in the bed. Makeup wrecked. Throat dry. That floaty, stupid feeling you get when your body has done something honest and your brain has not caught up. That is when I need a person, not a performance.

A glass of water is not romance. It is proof you noticed I am an animal with a mouth and a pulse. Same as you. You managed the filthy part. Do the basic part.

I work warehouse hours. I know the difference between finishing a task and leaving the floor in a state. Do not clock out on me while I am still on shift.

What I actually want is smaller than men think.

Water. A laugh. A sentence that is not about whether I came. You can ask. Just do not make my answer the whole review. Touch my back. Not as a hint you want another round in five minutes. As a you are here and I have not vanished into my own head.

Talk rubbish. The telly. The weird noise the pipes make. How my flatmate is going to know and pretend she does not. Tell me something pointless. I do not need a speech. I need the air in the room to come back to normal without me doing all the hosting.

If you want a shower, fine. Ask if I want one too. Do not disappear into the bathroom for twenty minutes and come out already dressed like you have a train to catch. That is not mysterious. That is manners falling off.

And if you are staying, stay. Do not hover by the door putting your shoes on in instalments. It makes me feel like I am being faded out of my own flat.

The ones who fail it always think the sex was the point.

Sometimes it is. I am not going to pretend I have never wanted a night that ends at the sex. I have left first. I have done the heels on, face in the mirror, no breakfast version. I know that walk. I used to think it made me powerful.

Lately it just feels like I am frightened of the quiet.

Because the quiet is where you find out what the night actually was. Chosen, or convenient. Wanted, or used and still smiling about it because the alternative is sitting with yourself.

I like sex. A lot, some weeks. That is not the same as liking the hole it leaves when someone treats the end like tidying up. You can be good in bed and still make me feel like a task that got ticked.

There is a man I still think about and it is not because of a trick. He got water. He sat up. He talked complete nonsense about a programme neither of us were watching. Hand on my back like it was nothing. It was not nothing. I slept. That is rare for me.

He got another. Obviously.

Aftercare is not a kink menu. It is character.

I keep seeing it sold like a deluxe package. Break her down, build her back up. Soft boy content with a water bottle. Fine, if that is your thing. Most nights I do not need rebuilding. I need you not to make me feel disposable the second you are done being impressed with yourself.

A friend of mine had a man go radio silent after, then get confused when she did not chase. She said they were even. He hated that. He wanted the afterglow without doing the after. That is the bit that tells on people. They like being wanted. They do not like being responsible for the wanting they caused.

If you can take your clothes off, you can ask if I got home. If I am already in your bed, you can stay in the bed. If you have to leave, say so like an adult. Early rota. Fine. I have an early rota more weeks than I do not. Say it before, not while you are hopping toward the hallway.

Do not text you good two days later like you invented care. That is not aftercare. That is guilt with better spelling.

What the quiet bit does to my head.

Sex shuts the day up. Warehouse radio, rent maths, the promotion I keep treating like a personality, the boyfriend I will not admit I want. For a bit I am not doing any of that. I am wanted. It is real and it fades. I still go looking.

If you vanish in the fade, my brain fills the gap with old noise. Not a speech. Just that dip. The one that makes me check my face in the nearest shiny thing and decide whether I am still the fun one.

A hand on my back interrupts that. So does a stupid comment. So does water, because it forces you to sit there and be a person who does a small kind thing without being asked to clap for it.

I know how that sounds. Soft. I will survive being called soft by a man who could not locate a tap.

How to do it without making it weird.

Do not announce it. Please do not say I am giving you aftercare now, like you have opened an app. Just do the thing.

Get the water. Ask if I want the lamp off or on. If I go quiet, do not panic and start interviewing me about whether it was good. Sit there. I will come back. I always come back. I just need the room not to feel like a job that ended.

If I make a joke, laugh. That is me climbing down. If I get up to fix my makeup, let me. That is armour. I will come back with a better mouth on and a slightly more honest face underneath it.

If we are in my flat, do not start a relationship with my kitchen. Do not raid the fridge like you live here and then leave before the kettle boils. Either stay for tea or go while I can still pretend this was clean.

If we are at yours, show me the bathroom like I am a guest, not a problem. A clean towel is not a proposal. It is the bare minimum for someone you just had inside your evening.

When I do not want it, I will say.

Some nights I want my own bed more than I want your hand. I will say I am going. I mean it. Do not take that as a cue to get colder so you can feel like you left first.

I can do casual. I am good at casual. Casual still includes not being rude. You do not get to skip the water because we did not call it dating. Access is not a free pass to treat me like the night ended at your convenience.

And if I ask you to stay, stay. Do not make me do the joke version of the ask so I can pretend I was kidding if you say no. I already did the brave bit with my body. The glass of water should not be the harder part.

This is how you get another.

Not by being the best I have had. I have had good. Good is common enough if you are paying attention and not in a rush to prove something.

You get another because I woke up and did not feel like I had to put the face back on immediately. Because I could be a bit wrecked and you did not punish me for it. Because you talked rubbish and it made the morning possible.

Because you stayed for the glass of water after.

That quiet bit is the whole test. Pass it and I might even text first. Fail it and I will still be polite. I am English. I can do polite on three hours sleep.

I just will not be back.

Sit up. Talk rubbish. Touch my back. The rest of it was never as complicated as men make it when they are trying not to care.

I’m Els. Thirty, London, warehouse floor by day and a full face by the time I leave the bathroom. I talk like I am fine because most of the time I am, and the rest of the time I would rather be funny than sit in the quiet. I like a night out, a look that lands, a cab I probably should not have booked.
