Sober Sex Always Tells On Everybody Faster

Drink can make a bad idea feel cinematic

The lighting helps. The music helps. Your mouth gets braver and the cab fare feels like part of the plot. You can tell yourself it just happened, which is a lovely sentence until you try it in daylight with a mug of tea and last night’s mascara still doing something tragic under your eye.

Daylight and tea do not do cinema. They do faces. They do breath. They do the bit where nobody has an excuse left.

That is why sober sex tells on everybody faster. Him. Me. The whole performance.

I am not anti drink. I am anti the alibi.

I like a night out. I like the first round that pretends it will stay the first round. I like my face done and the playlist in my ears on the way out the flat. London is easier when you are a little bit on. The city feels less like rent and more like a film you wandered into.

What I do not like is using that as a cover story after.

People talk online like sober sex is this rare clean thing nobody is doing anymore. Like if you are not a bit gone, you will notice the disappointment. I get why they say it. Inhibitions are heavy. I carry mine in my makeup bag and my jokes. A drink puts them down on a chair for a minute. Fine. That is not the same as the drink making the person.

If you only want me when you have had three, you do not want me. You want the version of the night that makes wanting easy to explain later.

I have used that version. I am not above it. I have left a club thinking he was a masterpiece and woken up thinking he was a man who talks through films. The alcohol did not invent him. It just put a filter on the bits I would have clocked at lunch.

Drunk sex can be fun. It is also noisy.

Everything is louder. The laugh. The hands. The I want you. The I should go. You miss the small tells because the big ones are doing a show.

Sober, there is nowhere to hide the timing. Does he rush. Does he watch my face or his own highlight reel. Does he ask. Does he go quiet in a way that feels like attention or a way that feels like he has left the room and forgotten his body behind.

I like filthy. I have never pretended otherwise. Filthy sober is a different animal. It means he still wants the thing when he can also want a glass of water and a normal sentence. It means I still want it when I can feel my feet and my brain and the fact I have an early shift.

That is the test I keep coming back to, even when I fail it.

Can you be filthy with the kettle on in the next room. Can you be filthy without a soundtrack doing half the work. Can you look at me in that cheap flat lighting and not flinch because I am a person in the morning, not a scene.

The morning is where the story usually dies.

Not always in a dramatic way. Sometimes it is just the tea. Two mugs. Not enough milk. Him on his phone like the night needs a receipt. Me doing my face in the bathroom because I do not know how to be wanted without armour on.

If last night only worked because we were both a bit gone, the kitchen will say so. You can feel it in how he stands. In whether he says my name or just alright. In whether last night is allowed to exist now that nobody can blame the gin.

I have had mornings where I wanted him more. Properly more. No plot, no excuse, just that stupid warmth. Those are the ones that scare me, because then it is not a story for the flatmates. Then I am in it.

I have also had mornings where I was already putting my heels on in my head before the toast popped. That is information. Uncomfortable. Useful.

Drink delays the information. It does not change it.

What sober tells on him.

Whether he can ask for what he wants without making it a joke first. Whether he can hear no on a small thing without sulking. Whether he treats my body like a place he is visiting or a place he is entitled to because the night was going well.

Whether he disappears into technique. Some men are very busy when they are sober. Performing competence. Checking themselves. It is like watching someone sit an exam on top of you. I would rather awkward and present than polished and gone.

Whether he stays after. That one is boring to say and still the most accurate. Anyone can be keen in the dark with a buzz on. The ones I remember could sit up, talk rubbish, put a glass in my hand. Not a speech. Not a review. Just not fleeing the scene like they had committed a crime against their own standards.

And whether he needed me to be a bit sloppy so he did not have to be brave. That is a tell. If I have to be softer in the head for him to come forward, he is not coming forward. He is waiting for the room to make it easy.

What sober tells on me.

This is the bit I would skip if I was only doing hot takes.

Sober, I cannot pretend I did not choose it. That is the whole point and also the sting. I like being chosen. I like the heat of it. I also like having an exit that looks like circumstance. The drink is a gorgeous exit. It was the drink. It was the night. It was London.

Sober, it was me.

Sober, I notice if I am using sex to shut the flat up. Body against body and the day goes quiet. It works until I am dressed. I know that pattern. I can clock it in other people from across a bar. I am slower on myself.

Sober, I get shy in a way that annoys me. Not sweet shy. Control shy. I start watching my face. I start thinking about the rota tomorrow and whether I look like I am trying too hard. A drink loosens that. Sober I have to talk. I have to say yes like I mean it, not like I fell into it.

That is better sex. It is also more exposing. No wonder people online say they do not want to go back. They are not talking about pleasure. They are talking about cover.

A note on the line, because the internet is feral about this.

There is a difference between a bit merry and actually gone. I am not interested in dressing that up. If someone cannot stand up properly, they cannot agree to a plot twist. I do not need a lecture to know that. I have been the girl who should have gone home. I have also been the girl who clocked it and got in a cab alone, which is less cinematic and much better in the morning.

Tipsy and choosing is one thing. Using someone else’s blur as permission is another. I like filthy. I like keen. I do not like convenient confusion.

If that sounds moral coming from me, good. I can want a lot and still have a line. Those are not opposites. People who need them to be opposites are usually looking for a loophole.

The ones who are still filthy in the afternoon.

That is who I mean when I say I like the ones with no excuse left.

Sunday. Grey light. Hair in a state. Someone puts the kettle on and then comes back to bed like the day has not started yet. No club. No alibi. Just appetite and a bit of manners. Rare, that.

Those ones do not need the night to invent desire. They can find it in a flat that smells like toast. They can say something rude and then laugh at themselves. They can check my face without turning it into a performance review.

I trust that more than any speech about chemistry. Chemistry is easy to fake when the room is helping. Sunday afternoon does not help. It just tells the truth at a normal volume.

I have left men who were brilliant after midnight and strangely small at noon. I have stayed too long for men who were only brave when they could blame the round. I am trying to stop doing that. Trying is not the same as doing. I still go out. I still say one drink. I still know how that sentence ends.

I am just less impressed by the cinema now.

So what do I actually want.

I want it to still stand when nobody is performing being a good night.

I want hands that do not need a soundtrack. I want a yes that would survive a glass of water. I want the filth to belong to us, not to the last bar that let us in.

If we drink, fine. I am not joining a cult. I am saying the drink should be a condiment, not the meal. If the whole thing collapses without it, that is not passion. That is scaffolding.

And if he only likes me when my edges are blurry, he can like the blur. I will be at work at six with a radio in my ear, counting pallets, doing my mouth in the staff toilets, being very much a person. That version of me is the one who has to live with what happened.

Sober sex is faster because it skips the trailer and puts you in the scene with the lights on.

Some people hate that.

I used to. I liked the trailer. I liked thinking the night had directed me.

These days I would rather know. Even when the knowing is awkward. Even when the tea is too strong and I am already thinking about the rota. Especially then.

Because if he is still filthy when there is no excuse left, that is not a story I have to edit for the kitchen.

That is just him.

And me, choosing it with my eyes open.

I’m Els. Thirty, London, warehouse floor by day and a full face by the time I leave the bathroom. I talk like I am fine because most of the time I am, and the rest of the time I would rather be funny than sit in the quiet. I like a night out, a look that lands, a cab I probably should not have booked.
