It was good. Too good, maybe
I could feel that at the time, which is annoying, because I would have preferred it to be average. Average is easy to walk away from. Average does not sit in your chest on the night bus. Average does not make you check your phone in the warehouse toilet like a teenager.
Next day he talks about timing. Work stress. How he has got a lot on. How he does not want to start something if he cannot do it properly.
I know a retreat when I am watching one.
He is not breaking up with me. We were not together. He is just backing out of the room with polite language so he can still look like a decent person while he does it.
The night did not feel casual
That is the problem.
If it had been messy and forgettable I would have filed it under fun and gone to Tesco. This was not that. He looked at me like he meant it. He stayed. He laughed at the stupid bits. He did the aftercare without me having to ask, which is rarer than people admit.
I remember thinking, do not do that face in your head, Els. Do not start writing a future on one good night.
Then I did it anyway. Not a wedding. Just a small stupid picture. Breakfast. Another night that was not only about getting each other off. Someone who did not vanish the second it felt real.
He felt it too. I am not inventing that to make myself feel chosen. You can tell when someone is in it and when someone is just using the hour.
Which is why the next day was so grim. He did not go cold because it was bad. He went cold because it landed.
Work stress is a very convenient coat
I work. I know what a busy week looks like. Radios, rotas, a manager who thinks extra responsibility is a gift. I have done a twelve hour shift and still managed to send a message that sounded like a human.
Busy exists. I am not thick.
Busy is not the same as, last night I was all over you and this morning I need a press release about my calendar.
When a man actually wants you, work gets a sentence. I am slammed, can I see you Thursday. When a man is panicking, work gets a speech. Suddenly he is very responsible. Suddenly he cares so much about not wasting my time that he would rather disappear than book a drink.
Timing is the other favourite. The timing is not right. Which usually means, the sex was right and the feeling after it was not in the plan.
I have used versions of this myself. I have left before sunrise with my face still on and called it self protection. I know the costume. That is how I recognise it on someone else.
Panic is not the same as confusion
People love calling this mixed signals. It is not that mixed.
He wanted me when it was heat and possibility. He got the heat. Then he had to decide if he wanted the person attached to it. That decision scared him, so he dressed it up as maturity.
I would have more respect if he said, I liked that and I cannot do more. Clean. A bit brutal. Fine.
Instead I get this soft fog. Maybe when things calm down. You deserve someone who can show up. It is not you.
If it is not me, stop writing me a character reference while you back away.
The panic is the tell. He is not confused about his job. He is confused about how quickly a night stopped being a game. Some men can do filthy and funny and present. Then closeness shows up and they treat it like a fire alarm.
I used to take that as a review of me. Too much. Too good in bed. Too easy. Too keen the next morning because I sent a normal message instead of playing dead.
Now I think a lot of them can handle desire. They cannot handle being seen wanting someone.
I hate that it works on me
This is the bit I would rather skip.
When he goes into timing mode, a part of me still tries to make it easier for him. I shrink the ask. I say no worries. I give him the space he announced he needed, like I am being mature and not just frightened of the quiet.
Quiet does me in. I can do a row. I can do a blunt no. I go strange when someone was warm and then turns the volume down without explaining the knob.
So I become very cool, very quickly. Fine, babe. Get your head together. I have a shift anyway.
Then I am in the bathroom at the flat doing my face and wondering if I imagined the whole night. My flatmate will clock it. She always does. She will not even need the story. She can see it in how long I take with the mascara.
I tell myself I am unbothered. I am bothered. I liked him. That is allowed. It does not make me pathetic. It makes me a person who had a good night and hoped it was the start of something ordinary.
Ordinary is what they panic at. Not the sex. The possibility of next Tuesday.
Too good is not a compliment when he runs
I keep turning it over. Was it too good. Did I make it feel like more than he bargained for. Did I look at him too straight. Did I stay too long. Did I send the morning text too soon.
That is a trap. It turns his retreat into my project. Suddenly I am rewriting the night to find the exact second I scared him, as if closeness is a mistake I can edit out next time.
If a man only likes me when I am easy to leave, the answer is not to become easier.
I like sex. I am not going to pretend I do not. I am not going to do the whole wait three months performance so a nervous man can feel in charge of the pace. If we want each other, I would rather be honest about that.
Honesty is not what panicked him. The fact that it felt like something did.
There is a difference between a hookup that stays a hookup and a night that accidentally grows a pulse. He felt the pulse. He chose work stress. That is information.
What I do with it now
I do not beg. I have done the version where I try to make myself smaller so he can come back comfortably. It works for about four days and then I hate both of us.
I also do not send the essay. He knows what happened. He was there.
I say something simple if I say anything. Last night was good. If you are actually busy, fine. If you are just spooked, say that. I am not doing the slow fade while you hide behind your inbox.
Sometimes they come back with more honesty. Sometimes they come back with more fog. Sometimes they do not come back at all, which is cleaner than a man performing responsibility at me.
I still want someone who can do the night and the next day. I want the person who does not need a speech about timing because he liked me enough to stay in the chat like a grown up.
Until then I am trying not to turn every panic into a story about my worth. He got scared. That is about his range. It is not a verdict on my body or my mouth or the fact I can be both filthy and hopeful in the same twelve hours.
We slept together. It was good. Now he is talking about work like work invented itself this morning.
I can see the exit. I do not have to follow him through it, asking if I did something wrong.
