Aftercare Should Not Be Marketed As Extra

He can take his clothes off

He can ask for my mouth, my time, the version of me that does not look at the clock. Then the second he is done, he becomes a man with a train to catch and a sudden interest in his phone.

Water and a check in are not deluxe. They are basic. If you can get naked with someone, you can ask if they got home.

I am tired of aftercare being sold like a spa add-on. Like I should be grateful he remembered I have a nervous system. Like kindness after sex is a kink you opt into, not part of the same night.

Call it what you want. Cuddles. The quiet bit. Do not make it precious and then skip it. That is the bit that tells me whether I was a person or a task.

The night does not end when he finishes.

I know that sounds obvious. It is not, not in practice.

In practice a lot of men treat the last thirty seconds like the credits. Job done. Lights up. Personality off. I have watched someone go from filthy and focused to scrolling like I had already left the room. Still in my bed. Still warm. Already gone.

That drop is brutal. Not dramatic crying brutal. Just that little hollow click where your body is still open and his attention has clocked out. I can handle a one night thing. I cannot handle being treated like the scene ended and I am leftover kit.

You do not need a speech. You do not need to ask what we are while I am still trying to find my pants. You need to stay in the room for five minutes like you meant any of it.

What I actually mean when I say aftercare.

Not rose petals. Not a playlist. Not some printed menu of services.

Water. A towel if it is messy. A hand on my back. A stupid joke so I come back into my own head. Did that feel alright. You good. Do you want the big light off.

If I am going home, did I get there. That text costs nothing. It is the difference between I had sex with you and I remembered you existed afterwards.

People online talk about aftercare like it is only for rough nights or specific scenes. Fine, those need more of it. So do ordinary nights. Your body still drops. Your brain still does that weird float. I still have to get on a night bus looking like I have been in a wind tunnel.

If he can manage the filthy talk, he can manage are you okay. One is not more advanced than the other. One just makes him feel bigger.

Radio silence is not mysterious. It is rude.

I have a friend who treats aftercare like a myth. Beforehand he is all you are different, this is easy, stay. After, nothing. Days of it. Then he acts wounded when someone gives him the same energy back.

That story did the rounds in my group chat and I laughed, then I did not. Because I have been the girl staring at a quiet phone, telling myself I knew the deal. I did know the deal. Knowing it does not stop the bit where you feel like an afterthought in your own night.

He already got what he came for. That line sounds hard. Sometimes it is the only accurate one. If we were even, say that before, not after you have gone quiet and left me to invent a personality for your silence.

I can do casual. I am good at casual. Casual still includes you acting like I made it home in one piece. That is not a relationship. That is manners.

Do not turn it into a performance review.

Was I good. Tell me I was the best. Rate me before I have had a sip of water.

No.

I am not marking your homework while I am still buzzing and a bit shy in the face. Ask if I liked something, fine. Ask later, better. Do not make the first sentence after sex about your ego. I have just been as unguarded as I get. I do not then want to host a feedback form.

Same the other way. I will not jump on what are we while he is still catching his breath. That is a different kind of pouncing. Give it a minute. Let the room come back. Then talk like adults if there is something to say.

Aftercare is not an interrogation. It is not a contract signing. It is you not bolting from the soft bit because the soft bit is where you might have to be decent.

Why it matters more than I like admitting.

Sex makes me feel chosen. I know that about myself. I can be cocky all evening and still go quiet if the warmth drops off too fast. That is not me being needy. That is my body noticing it was used as a destination and not a person.

I do not need him to love me. I need him not to vanish inside the same hour he was in my mouth. There is a gap there wide enough to walk through, and I am tired of men pretending they cannot see it.

On a work night I still have to get up and run a floor. Radio in my ear. People asking me where the pallet is. If I have been treated like rubbish at 1am, it sits on me. Not tragic. Just heavy. I put the face on in the bathroom mirror and go anyway. Does not mean it did not happen.

So yes. Ask if I got home. Send it even if you think I am the sort of girl who does not care. Especially then. The ones who look like they do not care are often the ones doing maths in the cab, calling it fine.

It is not only for me.

Men act like aftercare is something they give, like a treat. Plenty of them want it too and will die before they say so.

A hand in his hair. You were good. Stay there. Do not start listing plans or picking apart the night. Let him land. I have watched someone go shy the second it was over, like the bravado got left in his jeans. That is aftercare as well. He is not a machine that resets when he comes.

I can do that. I like doing that when I like him. It costs me nothing except not reaching for my phone first. Funny how that is the bit people skip. The phone is right there. So is the other person.

The hygiene bit nobody wants to sound boring about.

Pee. Wipe up. Drink something. Do not fall asleep in a state and call it romance. I am not your mum. I am also not doing a TED talk about UTIs at midnight. Just do the obvious things so tomorrow is not a punishment.

If we used a condom, deal with it like an adult. If we did not, that conversation should have happened before, and the after bit still includes are we alright, not a shrug.

Grown. Unsexy. Still part of the same hour. You want the fantasy, you get the clearing up. That is the deal whether you like the lighting or not.

What I do now.

I ask. Out loud. Stay a minute. I want water. Text me when you get in.

If that kills the mood for him, the mood was only ever one way. I used to hint and then feel stupid. Hints are how you end up doing extra labour for a man who already got what he wanted. I have done enough unpaid work at my actual job.

If he does it without being asked, I notice. I notice for weeks. That is the annoying bit. Kindness after sex ruins me for the ones who think rolling over is a personality. I replay the hand on my back longer than I replay the tricks. Anyone can copy a move. Fewer people stay human when the performance stops.

And if he cannot manage a check in, I do not need a row. I already have the information. He can take his clothes off. He cannot be bothered with the bit that makes me feel like I exist after. That is not a mystery. That is a no.

Water. A sentence. Did you get home.

Basic. Not extra. If that sounds like too much, he can stay on his own side of the night and leave me out of it.

I’m Els. Thirty, London, warehouse floor by day and a full face by the time I leave the bathroom. I talk like I am fine because most of the time I am, and the rest of the time I would rather be funny than sit in the quiet. I like a night out, a look that lands, a cab I probably should not have booked.
