II have heard it so many times I could say it in my sleep
He is just emotionally unavailable. Said like that is a star sign. Said like that explains the dry texts, the cancelled Tuesday, the way he can be filthy at midnight and blank by morning.
I used to make it sound cleverer than that. Made him complicated. Made myself patient. Made the whole thing feel like a project I could pass if I was funny enough and easy enough and never asked what this actually was.
Then you clock it properly and it is almost boring. He wanted the heat. He did not want the calendar.
What people actually mean when they say it
On my phone it gets used like a diagnosis. Group chat, voice note, someone lying on their bed doing their makeup and calling him damaged. I have done it. I still do it when I want the story to sound less simple than I got picked for the fun bits and dropped for the ordinary ones.
Because ordinary is the test. Anyone can be present when they are trying to sleep with you. The tell is a random weeknight. A plan that survives past the first drink. A message that is not just keeping you warm.
If he cannot say what this is, it is nothing. Not a slow burn. Not a maybe. Nothing with extra lighting.
People online love the phrase because it lets everyone off. He does not have to admit he liked the ego boost. You do not have to admit you stayed for the version of him that only exists after 11pm. You both get to call it complexity. Very tidy. Very dishonest.
Attention is not the same as choosing you
This is the bit that stings if you are honest. Attention feels like being chosen. A man looking at you like you are the only person in the pub will rearrange your whole evening. I know. I have left the house on a work night for less.
Then you want a Tuesday. Not a big speech. Just, are we doing this or am I a good time with a postcode. That is when the availability runs out. Suddenly he is bad at texting. Suddenly he has a lot on. Suddenly he does not want to put a label on it and ruin the vibe.
The vibe. Like asking a straight question is the thing that killed it, not the fact he never intended to be there in daylight.
I work in a warehouse. I like things that do what they say. If a pallet is not coming, it is not coming. Nobody stands there calling the delay emotionally unavailable. They just tell you it is late. I wish dating had the same manners.
How it looks when you stop romanticising it
It looks like voice notes that last six minutes and replies that last two words. It looks like him remembering your body and forgetting your rota. It looks like sex that is actually good, which makes it worse, because then your brain files him under safe when he has not earned the drawer.
It looks like you doing the translating. He said he missed you, so that means he is close. He said he is rubbish at this, so that means you should wait. He said he does not want to hurt you, which is always the sentence right before he does it slowly.
It looks like you telling your flatmates it is casual while leaving a toothbrush you swear you forgot. It looks like checking if he viewed the story. It looks like being cocky in the kitchen and then going quiet on the night bus.
I can be filthy and still want someone to stay. Those are not opposite hobbies. The men who call themselves unavailable often like the first half a lot. The staying is the part they treat like a trap.
Some people are hurting. A lot of them are just not picking you
I am not going to pretend nobody has real stuff. People freeze. People have lost someone. I know what a quiet house does to you. I have been the one filling silence with jokes and nights out and a face full of makeup so nobody has to sit in it with me.
That still does not make me a personality type you should date around. If I cannot show up, I should say that. Not collect someone else’s evenings and call my absence mysterious.
There is a difference between a person who is careful and a person who wants access. Careful looks like, I like you and I am slow. Access looks like, keep me on the hook while I decide if you are worth a Saturday.
One of those deserves patience. The other one deserves a closed chat.
The internet mixes them up on purpose. Damaged sounds sexier than selfish. Unavailable sounds deeper than I liked how you made me feel and I did not want the responsibility of making you feel anything back.
Why we keep dressing it up
Because the plain version makes you feel thick. You sat there building a future out of breadcrumbs. You told yourself the sex meant something because it did, to you. You let a maybe take up the space where a real person could have been.
Also, and I hate this, it keeps you looking busy. If he is a project, you are not just a girl in a flat in London wanting a boyfriend and pretending she does not. You are working on someone. That sounds less needy than I wanted him to pick me in public.
I can do the cocky version in my sleep. I do not do boyfriends. I do not wait. Then I am on the sofa with a full face on, no plans, hoping a name I should have muted says goodnight like it means something.
The phrase helps there too. He is unavailable. Not, I keep choosing men who vanish when it gets easy.
What I actually want, if I stop performing
I want a man who can stand a normal day. Not a speech. Not a grand gesture. A text that is not a performance. A plan that does not collapse because I asked if we were on. Someone who can be in my kitchen without treating closeness like a fine he is about to get.
I want sex that does not come with a disappearing act. I want the joke after. I want the kettle. I want to be wanted when I am not being entertaining.
If he likes the attention and not the Tuesday, that is information. It is not a riddle. You do not have to diagnose him. You can just leave him with the attention and take your Tuesdays back.
Does that mean I always do it? No. I have stayed for the version of a person that only existed in the dark and then acted surprised when morning was empty. I can clock a pattern and still walk into it because the alternative is sitting with myself. I know that about me. I am trying to be less impressed by my own excuses.
The only useful test
Ask what this is. Not in a speech. Not after three wines. In daylight. If he goes vague, that is the answer. If he punishes you for asking, that is the answer. If he says he does not want to ruin it, he is protecting the arrangement that suits him.
You cannot negotiate someone into availability. You can only notice whether they offer it.
Emotionally unavailable is not a type you should keep feeding. It is not hot. It is not deep. It is a man who liked how you looked at him and did not want to look back when it counted.
Call it that. Then decide if you are still available for it. I am trying, most days, to say no. Some days I still have to say it twice.
