Not always.
That is the bit I say first so I do not sound like a walking confession. Not every night. Not after every late shift. Just often enough that I have started noticing the pattern, which is worse than doing it and never thinking about it.
Body against body and the day shuts up. The radio in my head goes off. The rent sum. The rota. The little voice that starts up when the bathroom is free and I catch myself in the mirror too long. All of it goes quiet. Then I get dressed again and the flat comes back.
That is the whole trick. It works. Then it does not.
The noise I mean
People hear “quiet the flat” and think I mean the actual flat. Two friends, thin walls, someone always in the kitchen, a kettle that sounds like it is having a go at me. That is part of it. Shared space never really goes still. Even when they are out I can hear the building. Pipes. Next door. My own feet on the laminate.
The louder flat is the one I carry around. Warehouse noise stays in my ears after I clock off. So does the maths. So does the thing I will not say out loud about wanting a boyfriend and more money and a door that is only mine. I can look smug in a blazer and still have the volume up internally.
Telly helps a bit. Music helps a bit. The diary helps until I read it back and think, Christ, Els, pick a lane. Sex helps faster. That is the honest version.
What it actually does
I am not going to dress this up as some big spiritual reset. It is skin. Heat. Someone else’s weight. A mouth. Hands that have a job. For a stretch of minutes I am not the warehouse girl calculating a night out in her head. I am wanted in a way that does not need a speech.
That is the hit. Not always the orgasm, though that helps. The being chosen. Even if it is temporary. Even if he will be on the night bus before I have found my other earring. For a bit there is no gap. No room for the old quiet that scared me when I was small. Just breath and the ridiculous focus of it.
I can be filthy and still feel oddly safe in that window. Do not ask me to make that sound tidy. It is not tidy. It is just true.
The bit nobody puts on the dating app
I do not message someone saying, hi, I need the inside of my head to stop for forty minutes. I say I am out. I say I am bored. I say come over if you are not going to make it weird. The want is real. I like sex. I have a high drive and I am not going to apologise for it in my own house.
The extra layer is the problem. Some nights I would have been fine with a bath and last night’s leftover. I go looking anyway because leftover does not press against you. Leftover does not say your name like it means something. I know the difference between horny and lonely. I also know I mix them up when I am knackered.
If you have done this you already know the tell. You are getting ready and the makeup is not for him. It is for the version of you that can walk into a room and not look like she needs anything. Then you need everything. Then you pretend you do not.
It works until the clothes go back on
This is the part I notice now. During, the flat is gone. After, if he stays and there is water and a joke and a hand on my back, the quiet lasts a little longer. If he rolls over like the job is done, the volume comes back early. Sometimes louder, which feels unfair.
Getting dressed is the reset button I did not ask for. Knickers. Jeans. That top. Lip again because I cannot leave the house looking like I have been through something, even when I have. The second I am back in my own kit I am back on shift in my own life. Keys. Phone. The group chat. Did anyone buy milk.
I have stood in that hallway, face done, body still warm, and felt the whole day rush back in like a draft under the door. That is when I know it was never just sex. It was a mute button. Mute buttons do not fix the programme. They just stop you hearing it.
The morning after the quiet
Some mornings I feel smug. Good. Sorted. Like I got away with something. Other mornings I feel a bit hollow and I hate that word because it sounds like a caption. Hollow is just the gap where a person was and now there is tea and work boots.
My flatmates can clock it. Not the details. The hour I got in. The extra shower. The way I am brighter than I should be on three hours sleep. One of them will put a mug near me and not ask. That is love, I think. Or manners. Either way I take the tea.
I do not always text. I say I will leave it. Then I am on my side at one in the morning with the phone in my hand like a magnet. That is not passion. That is me trying to stretch the quiet a bit further. If he replies, great. If he does not, I call it a near miss and put on a playlist loud enough to drown the thought.
I know what people will say
Therapy. Yoga. A run. A hobby that does not involve someone else’s mouth. I have a diary. I have music. I have a job that keeps my hands busy. I am not a cartoon of a woman who only solves things on her back. I am a thirty year old who has found one reliable way to make the static drop, and it happens to be the same thing that makes me feel chosen.
Is that healthy every week? Probably not. Is it the same as not coping at all? Also no. I can hold both. I am good at holding both. That is half my personality.
Some men love this version of me until they clock that the appetite comes with a person attached. Then they want the sex and not the reason. Fine. They can have a night. They cannot have the story. The story is mine.
What I am actually trying to shut up
It is not a mystery if I am honest. I learned early that silence in a house can mean something has gone wrong. I got good at filling space. Jokes. Movement. A face that looks finished. Sex is just the most effective filler I have found as an adult. It is contact. It is proof I am here. It is a door closing on the bit of me that still does not trust a quiet room.
I will not drag that out for sympathy. I am not asking you to stroke my hair about it. I am saying the pattern has roots. Of course it does. Most of our habits do.
The promotion will not fix it. A boyfriend might not fix it either, which is annoying because I want both. What might help is noticing when I am reaching for a body because I want one, and when I am reaching because the flat in my head has started echoing.
So where does that leave me
I am not quitting. Let us not be dramatic. I like it. I am good at it. I am not going to turn my twenties and thirties into a cautionary tale because some nights I use pleasure as a dimmer switch.
I am going to be nosier with myself. That is the new rule, if I even do rules. If I am getting ready and the want is clean, go. If I am getting ready because I cannot sit with the kettle and my own thoughts, maybe I put the telly on first and see if the urge still has a name in half an hour.
Sometimes it will. Sometimes I will still call someone. I am not a project. I am a person who lives in a loud city, in a shared flat, with a head that does not come with an off switch.
Sex turns it down. Clothes turn it back up. That is the loop. Naming it does not make me virtuous. It just means I am less likely to pretend the loop is romance when it is really relief.
And if you have stood in a hallway after, face done, body quiet, life already climbing back into your ears, you know exactly what I mean. You get dressed. You check the mirror. You go.
