Ask Once Then Watch How I Answer

I like being asked

I am not going to pretend I do not. There is something properly hot about a person who does not just assume they have got the whole night because I kissed them in a cab.

What I like more, and this is the bit people skip, is what they do after I answer. Consent is not paperwork. It is you noticing I am still here.

I have had the tidy version. The one where someone says, is this okay, I say yes, and then they clock out of the conversation like they have ticked a box at work. Congratulations. You asked. Now watch me.

The ask is the easy part

Asking is not complicated. Can I. Do you want. Is this good. More of that. Slower. That kind of thing. You do not need a script from a magazine. You need a mouth and a bit of nerve.

I will tell you the truth. A lot of men treat the first yes like a season ticket. We are in. Lights off. Brain off. Hands everywhere. And look, I am not a nun. I like filthy. I like pace. I like being wanted without a committee meeting.

I just do not like being treated like the decision was made at the door and everything after that is complimentary.

Yes to kissing is not yes to your hand down my jeans. Yes to my flat is not yes to whatever you saw in a video last week. Yes ten minutes ago can turn into hang on now. That is not me being difficult. That is me being a person in a body that changes its mind like everybody else.

Watch my face, not just my mouth

I can say yes and still go quiet. I can laugh and still tense up. I can pull you closer and then go still because something shifted and I have not found the sentence yet.

If you are only listening for the word no, you are going to miss half the conversation.

Watch my hands. If they are on you, good. If they have gone floppy on the duvet like I have left the room without standing up, that is information. Watch my breathing. Watch whether I am kissing you back or just letting it happen because I do not want to make it awkward.

I hate that last one. I have done it. A lot of women have. You do not want to kill the mood. You do not want to be the girl who made it weird. So you stay polite in your own bed, which is a grim little trick the brain plays, and then you think about it on the night bus home.

If you are with me, do not make me use the night bus version of my voice. Catch it while we are still in the room.

How I actually answer

Sometimes I am filthy and obvious. Keep doing that. Harder. There. I am not shy once the door is shut. If I want it, I can say it.

Sometimes the answer is smaller. A nod. A sound. My hand on your wrist speeding you up or slowing you down. That counts. Treat it like it counts.

And sometimes the answer is me going a bit polite. That is the one you should worry about. Polite during sex is rarely a compliment. It usually means I am managing you. I am trying to stay nice while my body has already voted no, or not that, or not yet.

If I go quiet after being noisy, ask again. Not like a health and safety briefing. Like a person who is still interested in the same woman who was on you thirty seconds ago.

You alright. Want this. Too much. That will do. You can say it against my mouth. You can say it while your hand is still on me. You do not have to freeze the whole scene and reach for a clipboard.

Checking in is not a mood killer

People get so dramatic about this. As if one question is going to collapse the entire night. Please. I have had nights collapse because someone would not look at me. I have never had a night collapse because a man whispered, is that good, and then actually waited.

The wait is the sexy bit. Not the performance of asking. The fact you can pause long enough to hear me. That tells my nervous system I am not a task. I am in the room with someone who can handle a real answer.

And if the answer is no, or not that, or give me a minute, you do not get to sulk. Sulking is how you teach someone to fake it next time. I will not be doing extra emotional labour because your ego wanted a parade.

Change it. Slow down. Get the water. Laugh. Come back to kissing. There are a hundred ways to stay in the night without steamrolling through a moment I did not like.

What I am not asking for

I am not asking you to interview me between every movement. I do not need, may I touch your left shoulder, every four seconds. That is not attention. That is panic in a nice shirt.

I am not asking you to treat me like I am made of glass either. I like being handled. I like filthy talk. I like when someone knows what they want and says it.

I am asking you to stay awake.

Ask once, fine. Then keep an eye on the answer as it changes. Because it will change. Good sex moves. Bodies get overstimulated. Jokes land. A memory pops up at the worst time. A position that felt incredible becomes too much. That is normal. It is not a personal attack on your technique.

The difference between being wanted and being used

This is the part I care about, even when I pretend I do not.

Sex is how I feel chosen. I know that about myself. It is also how I disappear if the other person is only after the yes and not after me. There is a version of a night that looks successful from the outside and still leaves me in the bathroom doing my face like I am putting armour back on.

The men I remember, the ones who ruin me a bit, are not always the most skilled. They are the ones who clock the shift. They notice I have gone somewhere. They do not punish me for it. They ask. Then they watch. Then they adjust without making me write an essay.

That is competence. Not the other stuff people brag about in group chats.

If you want a simple rule

Here it is.

Ask. Listen to the words. Then listen to the rest of me. If those two things disagree, believe the rest of me and slow down until they match again.

Do not congratulate yourself for the question and then ignore the answer because it was not loud enough for you.

I will meet you there. I am not trying to be a test. I am trying to stay in my body with another person and still like myself in the morning. That is not a big ask. It just requires that you keep looking at me after I have said yes.

Ask once. Then watch how I answer. That is the whole job.

I’m Els. Thirty, London, warehouse floor by day and a full face by the time I leave the bathroom. I talk like I am fine because most of the time I am, and the rest of the time I would rather be funny than sit in the quiet. I like a night out, a look that lands, a cab I probably should not have booked.
