It was fun
The chase was fun. I am not going to sit here and act like I did not enjoy it.
He was sharp with it as well. The late texts. The little bit of heat that makes you redo your lip in the work toilets and then walk back onto the floor like nothing happened. I like being wanted. I like the feeling of someone trying. I am cocky, not stupid. Attention feels good when it is aimed at you on purpose.
Then I texted first in daylight.
Not a paragraph. Not a speech. Not I miss you. Just a normal message from a woman on her break, asking if he wanted to do it again when we were both free.
That was the moment the spark died. You could almost hear it go.
Some men only want the me that leaves at dawn anyway. The second she turns into a person with a lunch break, they lose the plot.
Night-time me is a very convenient girl
Night-time me is excellent value. She looks finished. She is funny. She does not ask what the week looks like. She can be filthy and light with it, then she is gone before anyone has to deal with breakfast or the fact she has a shift in the morning.
Men love that girl because she does not ask them to be anyone in particular. She lets them stay in the bit where they are good at wanting, and they never have to get as far as keeping.
I know how to be her. I have been her a lot. It is safer than staying. If I leave first, I get to call it style. If I wait, I get the quiet, and I have never been good with men who go quiet.
He liked that version. He liked the almost. He liked feeling like he had nearly got me to stay.
He did not like the woman who sent a message at twenty past one while drinking warehouse coffee that tasted like the machine had given up months ago.
That woman is apparently too available. Too ordinary. Too much like someone you might have to see again in actual light.
I knew the rules and I broke them on purpose
Do not text first. Leave a gap. Be busy even if you are on the sofa. Make him wonder. I have heard all of it. I have done all of it. It works, which is why people keep doing it, and also why it makes you feel slightly sick once you notice you are managing a grown man like a project.
I texted first because I liked him enough to stop pretending I was booked until Thursday. I wanted to know if the night version of him existed in the day. That is not chasing. That is checking.
He failed the check with a dry reply that said almost nothing. Not nasty. Just empty. The kind of message you send when you want the door left open without walking through it.
I read it on the plastic chair out the back and felt myself get smaller for about four minutes. Then I got annoyed. Not cinematic angry. Just that flat irritation you get when you realise you offered something simple and they treated it like you had asked for a joint mortgage.
One decent text is not a campaign. If that is too much, he was never holding much.
A good night makes the silence worse
If it had been mid I would have moved on before my mascara had even settled. Bad nights are easy. You laugh, you tell the flat, you go out again.
Good nights stick. That is the problem.
You remember the look. You remember the laugh. You remember thinking, oh, this one might be a person. Then they go thin in the chat and your brain starts doing unpaid overtime. Maybe he is busy. Maybe I came on too strong. Maybe daylight me is a bit much.
I hate that last thought because I know where it comes from. I would rather be the funny one than sit in a quiet house waiting to see if someone is still there. So I cover. Music up. Face on. Jokes ready. It looks like confidence. Sometimes it is just me not wanting to feel eight years old again while a man goes silent for no useful reason.
I drafted three messages and deleted all of them. I am proud of that, in a small sad way. He had already had the fun bit. He did not get the spiral as well. Or he did. I just kept it in the kitchen.
They do not want a girlfriend. They want a plot twist.
This is what I keep circling.
Some men like you. Properly. They are a bit awkward in the day. They remember you work. They do not punish you for being keen, because keen just means you are not playing dead.
Then there are the ones who like a story. The near miss. The girl who might stay. The night that feels like winning. The second you become easy to reach, the story ends. You have stopped being a chase and started being a choice. Choices need follow through. Follow through needs character.
A lot of them have energy for the first part and nothing left for the second.
I used to think I had done something unsexy by showing my hand. Like wanting a second night in daylight made me less of a catch. Now I think it is ruder than that. He did not go off me. He went off the effort. I made it simple, and simple did not give him anything to win.
I am not a level in a game. I am a warehouse manager with sore feet and a life that continues after last orders.
I still wanted him to prove me wrong
I would love to wrap this up like I am fully sorted and above it.
I wanted the ping. Of course I did. I wanted him to come back and be the daytime version of the man I met at night. I had already started liking him more than the length of one good evening really justifies. That is what chemistry does. It makes you generous with meaning.
Wanting someone is not begging. I sent one ordinary message. That is contact. If contact kills it, there was not much there to kill.
I knew that while I was still checking the chat. Both things can be true. You can see the pattern and still feel a bit stupid about it in your own kitchen, with last night’s face half off, telling yourself you are too cocky for this exact feeling.
I am not too cocky for it. I am just good at looking like I am.
I am not going back to being hard to reach for sport
I am done starving a conversation to keep a man interested. That version of me is tiring. She still ends up in the same place, only later, and she has wasted a week of decent eyeliner on someone who only liked her when she was inconvenient.
If you like me, you can like the girl who leaves at dawn and the one who texts at lunch. They are the same person. One of them is just less of a performance.
I will still do the hair. I will still be a bit too much. I will still want sex and banter and someone who does not vanish the second it stops feeling like a chase. I am not becoming meek because one man only had appetite for the hunt.
He liked me until it got easy. Fine. Then he never liked me in a way I can use.
I wanted a person. He wanted a plot.
Those are not the same thing, even if they feel identical for a few hours, when the lighting is low and you have not yet sent the first ordinary message in the middle of the day.
