The Best Ones Never Make It Weird

I can still pick them out of a lineup and I only spent one night with some of them

Not because the sex was cinematic. Not because they said anything clever. Because they did not make it weird.

That is rarer than people admit. You can find appetite in this city before last orders. Manners is the bit that keeps going missing.

I do not need a speech about my past. I do not need a scoreboard. I do not need a man treating my body like a rumours page. I want someone who wants it, does it properly, and does not turn the morning into an interview.

Those ones stay in my head far too bloody long.

What weird actually looks like

Weird is not kinks. I like filthy. Weird is the commentary.

Weird is him going quiet after and then asking how many. Like the answer is going to tell him if I am worth a second round or a slow walk to the door. Weird is the little laugh when I say I like something specific, as if I have handed him a weapon. Weird is the recap. The rating. The sudden interest in who else has been in this flat.

I live with two other people and the walls are not that thick. I do not need a post match analysis on top.

There is a version of this that pretends to be intimacy. He asks questions he has not earned. He wants the story of my twenties while his socks are still on the floor. He wants to know if I do this a lot. He wants to know if I liked it more with someone else. He wants a ranking and he wants to come first in it.

I have a degree. I can add up. I still will not sit there doing maths on my own life for a man who has known me since last orders.

The best ones do not ask. Not because they are stupid. Because they can tell the difference between curiosity and ownership.

Appetite is easy. Manners is the filter.

People act like wanting it a lot makes you complicated. It does not. It makes you honest. I have a high drive and I am not going to whisper that like a confession. I like sex. I like it often. I like it when someone is actually present for it.

Appetite without manners is just taking.

Manners, in this context, is not pulling my chair out. It is checking the pace. It is not grabbing my head like a steering wheel. It is water after. It is not rolling over like the job is done and I am leftover packaging. It is a laugh when something is daft, because sex is daft half the time and anyone who cannot handle that is going to make the whole thing solemn and strange.

The good ones are filthy and still careful. That combination ruins you a bit. You start thinking the rushed ones are normal, then someone pays attention and your brain files it under rare.

I had one who did not give a speech. Did not ask for a list. Did not make a joke about how I must get this a lot, which is the kind of joke that is never actually a joke. He wanted it. I wanted it. We did it. He asked if I was alright in the same voice he used when he asked if I wanted tea. No performance. No sudden boyfriend voice. No sudden stranger voice either.

I remember the tea more than I should.

The scoreboard thing

There is always someone who wants numbers. How many. How recent. How I like it, said like a trap.

I do not owe anyone a tour of my sheets. Curiosity dressed as concern still wants a map. I have slept with people. I will sleep with people. That is not a plot twist. If you need a figure before you can enjoy yourself, you are not trying to know me. You are trying to decide if I am safe to want.

Safe to want. As if I am a product with a warning label.

The best ones do not do that audit. They clock that I know what I am doing and they treat that as good news. Not a problem to solve. Not a story to manage. Just information. She is here. She wants this. Brilliant.

I can be cocky about a lot of things. Makeup. Work. The way I walk into a room. I am less cocky about this because the second you admit you remember someone, people start writing a moral on it. She must have caught feelings. She must be lonely. She must want a boyfriend and she will not say.

Maybe I do. That is a separate article. This one is about the men who did not make a night feel like evidence.

What they actually do instead

They stay in the room.

Not necessarily overnight. I have left before sunrise more times than I have stayed, and some of that is me. I am good at the exit. The good ones do not punish you for either choice. They do not turn staying into a conversation about what this means. They do not turn leaving into a character review.

They do not narrate my body like content.

They do not bring up an ex at the exact wrong moment. They do not compare. They do not say you are different, which is just another way of saying I have a file on other women and you are being marked against it.

They can be filthy without making me feel like a dare they are going to tell later.

That last one matters more than people think. I work in a warehouse. Gossip travels. I do not need a man collecting material. The best ones treat the night as ours, even if ours only lasts until the morning tube.

One of them put my hair behind my ear after and it should have been too much. It was not. It was just a person who had been in my space and did not need to turn it into a scene. I put my face back on in the bathroom, caught myself in the mirror, and thought, right. That is what it is supposed to feel like. Not fireworks. Not destiny. Just not weird.

Why I remember them too long

Because the bar is on the floor and they still clear it.

Because most nights are fine. Fine is easy to forget. Fine is a cab home and a bit of makeup on the window and me calling it a good time because the alternative is admitting it was hollow. The ones who do not make it weird leave a mark that is not even physical. You replay the ordinary bits. The glass of water. The lack of questions. The way they did not flinch when I was straightforward about what I wanted.

I wrote one of them in my diary and then felt embarrassed about it, which is stupid. Remembering someone who treated you like a person is not the same as planning a wedding. It is just your brain keeping the receipt.

I do not need them to become a boyfriend. That want sits in a different drawer and I do not always open it. What I need is the proof that casual does not have to mean cold. People online love arguing about that. Half of them think aftercare is only for relationships. The other half think you are deluded if you expect a kettle and a bit of decency from someone you met on an app.

I expect it. Not a breakfast spread. Not a speech. Decency. If you can put your mouth on me you can ask if I want water. That is not romance. That is being house trained.

The ones who nearly get it

There is a middle category and they annoy me more than the rubbish ones.

They are good in bed and then they get nervous about their own manners. They overcorrect. Suddenly it is how was that for you, was that okay, you can be honest, I do not mind. Which is sweet for about ten seconds and then it becomes another performance. I do not want a man managing my review. I want him to stay in his body.

Or they get proud. They did a good job and now they want a medal. They want to hear they were the best. I will tell you it was good if it was good. I will not write you a reference.

The best ones do not need the reference. They can tell. They grin. They pass me my phone. They do not turn the after into a campaign.

I had one who was late for work the next day and still did not make me feel like an inconvenience. He just said he was knackered and kissed the side of my head like it was nothing. It was nothing. That is why it worked.

What I am not asking for

I am not asking to be saved. I am not asking for a soft edit of who I am. I like going out. I like coming home loud. I like sex that does not come with a lesson. I have a job and a rota and a promotion I actually want. I have flatmates and a bathroom queue and a habit of putting a full face on even when I am only going to Tesco.

I am not a project.

If you need me smaller to enjoy me, you are not one of the best ones. If you need my history in bullet points, you are not one of the best ones. If you go cold the second it is over because kindness might look like commitment, you are not one of the best ones.

Kindness is not a contract. People get so frightened of that they forget how to be normal.

The bit I will not tidy up

I remember them too long and I am not going to pretend I do not.

It sits on me on the night bus. It sits on me when someone new is good enough but slightly off, and my brain goes, he would not have said that. That is unfair on the new one. I know. I still do it. The standard got set by people who were not even trying to set a standard. They were just not weird about it.

No speech about my past. No scoreboard on the night. Just appetite and a bit of manners.

If that sounds like a low bar, have a look at your last few nights and tell me how often it was actually met.

I will keep going out. I will keep being the version of me that flirts first and thinks later. I will keep leaving early when staying feels like too much truth. And I will keep a private list, not of bodies, of the ones who made it simple.

They never made it weird.

That is why they last.

I’m Els. Thirty, London, warehouse floor by day and a full face by the time I leave the bathroom. I talk like I am fine because most of the time I am, and the rest of the time I would rather be funny than sit in the quiet. I like a night out, a look that lands, a cab I probably should not have booked.
