Soft Launching Me Is Not A Compliment

A wrist in his story is not commitment

It is cover. If I am good enough for his bed I am good enough for a face.

I said that out loud in the kitchen and one of my flatmates did that little nod people do when you have finally named the thing they have been side-eyeing for weeks. Because we have all seen it. Two glasses. A hand with a watch. The back of a head that could belong to anyone. Caption: nothing. Music: something soft so it looks accidental.

It is not accidental.

I can be filthy. I can be casual. I can do a night that does not need a label by Monday. What I will not do is clap for being cropped out of a life I was just inside of.

What people actually mean by a soft launch

Online it has a cute name now. Soft launch. Like you are a limited menu item and not a person who was in his flat two hours ago.

The starter pack is always the same. Hands on a table. Two plates. His trainers next to mine. A story that disappears in twenty four hours so nobody can hold him to it. Friends clock it immediately. Exes clock it even faster. Everyone else gets to play detective with a wrist.

A hard launch is the opposite. Face. Name. Sometimes a tag, if he is feeling brave. That one at least has the decency to say the quiet part.

The soft one wants the benefits of being seen with someone without the cost of being seen with you.

It feels like a mention. It is a hedge.

The first time it happens you can trick yourself. He posted something. I am on his phone. That must mean I matter.

Then you zoom in like a lunatic on the night bus and realise you are an accessory. A nail. A sleeve. Proof there is a body in the chair opposite him, not proof he is proud of the body.

People will tell you it is privacy. Sometimes it is. I get privacy. I work in a warehouse. I do not need the whole floor clocking who I went home with. I do not need my mum asking questions off the back of a story. Privacy is a locked door. A cropped wrist on a public story is not a locked door. It is a press release with the name blacked out.

He still wanted an audience. He just did not want to attach my face to the rumour.

Privacy is real. Cover is different.

There are fair reasons to keep someone off the grid. New job. Messy ex. Kids. A family that treats your dating life like a group project. You are not sure yet and you do not want to perform a couple before you are one. Fine. Say that to the person in the room with you. Do not make them find out they are a silhouette.

Cover is when the sex is public enough to happen and the person is private enough to erase.

Cover is when his mates already know my name and his followers get a mystery forearm.

Cover is when I can sit on his sofa in yesterday’s makeup and still not be allowed to exist in the one place he curates on purpose.

I am not asking to be a grid post with a paragraph. I am asking not to be treated like a plot twist he might delete.

If I am in the bed I can be in the frame

This is the bit that winds me up. You will have me. You will hear me. You will let me leave a hair tie on the side like I live there. Then the camera comes out and I become a prop.

Be so serious.

If the worry is “what if it ends”, it ends anyway. Cropping my face does not save you from the conversation. It just means I get to feel disposable twice. Once when you go quiet. Once when I realise I was never going to be shown as a whole person.

I have done casual. I have left before sunrise and meant it. That version of me does not need a story at all. The version that stays for tea does. Not a campaign. Just honesty about whether I am allowed to be real in your life or only convenient in it.

Soft launching is often about other people, not you

He is thinking about the group chat. The girl from last summer. The followers who like him single. The option of looking available while being occupied.

That last one is the rot.

A story with my wrist keeps the comments useful. People can still slide in. He can still pretend it was a mate. He can still say it was nothing if someone he rates more asks.

I do not want to be the nothing he can explain away.

Call me old fashioned. I have a maths degree and a warehouse radio in my ear five days a week. I am not precious. I am just done being a rumour with good hair.

When I do not mind staying off his phone

If we have both said this is just sex, keep me off the story. I would rather be absent than half there.

If we are new and we have actually spoken about it, I can live without the internet knowing. The internet is not the relationship. The kettle is. Whether he walks me to the overground is. Whether he uses my name in a room that is not dark.

What I mind is the performance of almost. The hint that I am special enough to post and not special enough to identify. That is not mystery. That is branding.

And I have done enough nights out to know when someone is building an exit into the photo.

What I would rather have

Say it in the room before you say it to a story.

If you want privacy, say “I do not post people yet.” If you want time, say “not yet.” If you only want me in private, say that too, so I can decide if I am in the mood to be a secret. Secrets can be hot. Secrets that I did not agree to are just embarrassment with better lighting.

If you post me, post me. Face. Ugly laugh. The coat I wore because I came from work. I do not need a caption that says girlfriend. I need not to be a wrist.

If you cannot do that, do not do the teaser either. Leave the story for the meal deal and the sunset. I would rather be undocumented than cropped.

A hard launch is not the only grown option

People talk like the only two settings are blurred shoulder or engagement photo. That is online brain.

You can also just not post. You can tell your actual friends. You can walk into a pub and not flinch when someone asks who you are with. You can introduce me with my name instead of “this is… uh.”

That is a launch. It just happens in real life, where it costs you something.

Social media made us think a relationship is not real until it has an audience. Then it made us too scared of the audience to show the person. So we invented a halfway ritual that lets everyone speculate and nobody commit. Very 2026. Very exhausting.

So no, I am not flattered

I know how this is supposed to feel. Chosen. Hinted at. Like I am a secret worth keeping.

It feels like I am a secret worth hiding.

Keep your two glasses. Keep the playlist. Keep the watch on the table. If my face is a problem, my body should have been a problem first.

I will be the girl who asks. I will be the girl who leaves if the answer is a cropped story and a shrug. I look better in full frame anyway. I have spent enough time in bathroom mirrors to know that.

Soft launching me is not a compliment. It is a draft he can still delete. I am not doing drafts. Not when I already stayed the night.

I’m Els. Thirty, London, warehouse floor by day and a full face by the time I leave the bathroom. I talk like I am fine because most of the time I am, and the rest of the time I would rather be funny than sit in the quiet. I like a night out, a look that lands, a cab I probably should not have booked.
