Not romantic on paper
I know that. Nobody is writing poems about a clinic appointment and a text that says all clear.
Still. He said the word without flinching, and I felt my shoulders drop in a way that had nothing to do with his hands.
Clinic. Tests. When did you last go. Do you want to go together. That was the conversation. No speech about trust. No face like I had accused him of something filthy he did not do. Just adult. And I am ngl, that did more for me than half the dirty talk I have sat through in worse lighting.
Hope is not a strategy.
Most people hope. That is the honest version. They look fine, they smell good, they work somewhere normal, so the brain files them under safe. I have done it. I have been the girl who wanted the night more than the admin. I have told myself I would deal with it tomorrow, which is a sentence that has never once made tomorrow braver.
Hope is how you end up in a chemist at lunch, pretending you are buying anything else. Hope is how you sit on a night bus doing maths in your head that has nothing to do with rent.
I like sex. I like a lot of it, some weeks. That does not make me sloppy on purpose. It does make me someone who has to be more grown than the men who think condoms and vibes are the same department.
A man who just hopes is asking me to carry the worry for both of us. I have enough on already. Rota. Rent. Two flatmates. A face I put on in the hallway mirror. I am not adding his nerves to my bag.
If it kills the mood, the mood was thin.
People say that like it is a law of physics. Mention sexual health and the whole night dies. As if desire is so fragile it cannot survive one practical sentence.
If a sentence about a clinic can wreck him, he was not that into it. He was into the idea of me being easy. Easy meaning quiet. Easy meaning I do not make him feel like a person who has to think.
I have watched it happen. You bring it up and he does the little laugh. The why, do you not trust me. As if trust is a substitute for information. As if I asked him to swear on his mum instead of act like a grown man who has a body and uses it.
Trust is what you build after you have told the truth. It is not a free pass you wave because the lighting is nice.
The ones who get offended are telling on themselves. Not always because they have something to hide. Sometimes they just cannot stand a woman who sounds like she has done this before. That one is a him problem. I clock it and I keep my clothes on.
What he actually said.
We were in my kitchen. Kettle on. That in between bit where you either go to the bedroom or you start being real. He did not make a speech. He did not treat it like a TED talk. He just asked when I last got checked, and said he could book in this week if I wanted to do it at the same time.
No clipboard energy. No ranking me. No body count maths. Just the practical thing, said like a person who has been to a clinic and lived.
I made a joke because that is what I do when something lands. Then I said yes. Then I fancied him more, which I did not expect to say out loud, even to myself.
It was not because the subject was sexy. The subject is waiting rooms and forms and that particular NHS smell. It was because he did not crumble. He did not need me to mother him through basic adulthood. He could hold the unromantic bit and still look at me like he wanted me after it.
That combination is rarer than people think.
Hot is not the same as cinematic.
People want the scene. Low voice, dim lamp, nobody mentioning anything that exists in daylight. I like a bit of that. I am not above it. I will do filthy. I will do laughing. I will do the version where nobody is filling in a form.
I also like not being stupid.
Hot, for me, is a man who can stay in the room when the conversation stops being a performance. Who does not treat my caution like an insult. Who understands that I can want him and still want facts. Those two things are not opposites. They are the same night if he is any good.
I work on a warehouse floor. I like systems. I like knowing what is in a box before I sign for it. Apply that to people and suddenly I am cold. Funny how that works. When a man does it, he is careful. When I do it, I am killing the vibe.
He did not make me feel cold. That is the bit that stayed in my head on the way to work the next morning, radio already going, makeup done on the night bus because the bathroom queue won again.
Together is easier than the interrogation version.
I used to ask it like a test. When did you last go. What did they check. Can I see. That energy makes people lie, or puff up, or do the trust speech.
Together is cleaner. We both go. We both get the same information. Nobody is on trial. You can even laugh about the waiting room. I have done worse dates than a clinic. At least that one has a point.
I am not a doctor. I am not going to sit here listing every swab like I work in sexual health. I know what I need to know for my own life. I know where to book in London. I know a clear result is not a personality, and a result that is not clear is not the end of being a person either. It is information. Then you deal with it like an adult instead of like a rumour.
The men who cannot say the word clinic are often the same ones who want the most access. They want skin and mornings and no questions. That is not passion. That is convenience wearing aftershave.
It is not an accusation.
This is the part people get wrong on purpose. Asking is not me calling him dirty. I have had sex. I have had plenty. I am not standing on a moral ladder. I am standing in a shared flat with thin walls and a job I need, and I would like to keep my body in working order while I also enjoy it.
If you sleep with people, you collect risk. That is not a slur. That is the deal. I can like the deal and still manage it. Same as I can like a night out and still count the cab in my head before I book it.
Do not make me comfort you for being asked a normal question. I am good at aftercare. I am not good at babysitting a grown man through the idea that his penis exists in the real world.
And if he has something to tell me, I would rather hear it from him than from a symptom. Kindness counts there too. The ones who stay decent when the news is awkward are the ones I remember. Not the ones with the best line in the club.
What I want now, if I am being honest.
I still want the filthy bit. I still want to be chosen in a dark room and not have to explain my whole life first. That has not gone away just because I got sensible about paperwork.
I also want the man who can hold both. Desire and admin. Hands and a calendar. A mouth that can say clinic without turning it into a row about whether I trust him.
That is a low bar. It feels high because so many people live under it.
I used to think talking about tests was something you did when the fun was over, or when you had already been stupid. Now I think it is part of the fun if the person is right. Not sexy like a film. Sexy like I can relax. Sexy like I am not the only adult in the room.
He booked the appointment. He sent me the time. He did not need a medal. He just did the thing.
Not romantic on paper.
Still the hottest sentence I have heard in months, and it was not even trying.
